THE ROLEX ARTS FESTIVAL

“Rolex Arts Festival: Celebrating 20 Years of Mentoring” is a week-long event taking place on 22–28 May, 2023 in multiple venues across Athens to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative.

The festival marks the first time that Rolex has taken its mentoring programme to the Greek capital, along with dozens of the world’s most talented artists.

A special pre-festival programme, including workshops, talks and dedicated to the people of Athens and organized to engage local artists, arts professionals and young people, will be offered from 22–25 May.

Μια συζήτηση ανάμεσα στον Walter Murch, μέντορα της Rolex στο πεδίο του κινηματογράφου, και στον Γιώργο Μαυροψαρίδη, που εξετάζουν την τέχνη του μοντάζ μέσα από κινηματογραφικά αποσπάσματα, μιλώντας ο ένας για ταινίες του άλλου. Τη συζήτηση συντονίζει ο Ορέστης Ανδρεαδάκης, Καλλιτεχνικός Διευθυντής του Διεθνούς Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου Θεσσαλονίκης.

Βιογραφικό:

Από το 1969, ο αμερικανός μοντέρ εικόνας και ήχου Walter Murch έχει συνεργαστεί με κινηματογραφιστές στους οποίους συγκαταλέγονται και οι Francis Ford Coppola και Anthony Minghella σε κινηματογραφικές ταινίες-ορόσημα, όπως η τριλογία Ο Νονός , Η συνομιλία, Αποκάλυψη, τώρα! και Ο Άγγλος ασθενής, για την οποία του απονεμήθηκε το άνευ προηγουμένου διπλό Όσκαρ το 1996. Ο Murch συνέγραψε ένα βιβλίο σχετικά με το μοντάζ, In the Blink of an Eye (2001), και συνεργάστηκε με τον συγγραφέα Michael Ondaatje στο βιβλίο The Conversations: Walter Murch and the Art of Film Editing (2002). Η πιο πρόσφατη ταινία του, στην οποία είναι συν-συγγραφέας σεναρίου και μοντέρ, ήταν το ντοκιμαντέρ μεγάλου μήκους Coup 53 (2019). Ο Murch γράφει ένα ακόμη βιβλίο για τον κινηματογράφο, Suddenly Something Clicked, που θα εκδοθεί από την Faber&Faber το 2024.

Ο Walter Murch υπήρξε μέντορας της Sara Fgaier την περίοδο 2012−2013.

Ο μοντέρ Γιώργος Μαυροψαρίδης έχει αποσπάσει 12 βραβεία και 24 υποψηφιότητες για ταινίες όπως οι Κυνόδοντας (2009), Ο αστακός (2015), Ο θάνατος του ιερού ελαφιού (2017) και Η ευνοούμενη (υποψηφιότητες για Όσκαρ και BAFTA, βραβείο ACE Eddie και βραβείο Ευρωπαίου Μοντέρ της Χρονιάς). Στο σκεπτικό της βράβευσης, η Ευρωπαϊκή Ακαδημία Κινηματογράφου ανέφερε τα εξής: «Με μεγάλο ταλέντο, ο Γιώργος κατάφερε να μοντάρει την ταινία Η ευνοούμενη με έξυπνο, φρέσκο και ευρηματικό τρόπο, χαρίζοντας στην ταινία μια άνετη και φυσική ροή, κάνοντάς την παιχνιδιάρικη σαν παρτίδα ντάμας». Ο καλλιτέχνης πρόσφατα ολοκλήρωσε το μοντάζ για την ταινία Poor Things και τώρα μοντάρει την ταινία And (και οι δύο ταινίες σε σκηνοθεσία του Γιώργου Λάνθιμου).

Συντονιστής: Ορέστης Ανδρεαδάκης, Καλλιτεχνικός Διευθυντής του Διεθνούς Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου Θεσσαλονίκης. H πρώτη του ποιητική συλλογή Σκοτεινός πληθυντικός τιμήθηκε με το Χρυσό Βραβείο Καλύτερης Εικονογράφησης ΕΒΓΕ το 2022.

Biography:

Since 1969, American film and sound editor Walter Murch has worked with film-makers including Francis Ford Coppola and Anthony Minghella on cinematic milestones such as The Godfather trilogy, The Conversation, Apocalypse Now and The English Patient, for which he won an unprecedented double Academy Award in 1996. Murch is the author of a book on film editing, In the Blink of an Eye (2001), and joined with author Michael Ondaatje for the book The Conversations: Walter Murch and the Art of Film Editing (2002). His most recent film, which he co-wrote and edited, was the feature-length documentary Coup 53 (2019). Murch is currently writing another book on film, Suddenly Something Clicked, which will be published by Faber&Faber in 2024. Walter Murch mentored Sara Fgaier in 2012−2013.

Biography:

Yorgos Mavropsaridis is an editor, who has won 12 awards and 24 nominations with films including Dogtooth (2009), The Lobster (2015), The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) and The Favourite (2019) (Oscar and BAFTA nominated, won ACE Eddie and European editor of the year award), for which the European Film Academy reasoned: With great talent, Yorgos has succeeded in editing The Favourite in a clever, new and inventive way, thus giving the film an easy and natural flow, playful like a game of checkers. Currently he has completed the edit of Poor Things now editing And (dir. Yorgos Lanthimos).

Moderator: Orestis Andreadakis, Artistic Director of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival

Biography:

Orestis Andreadakis is the Director of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival and Thessaloniki Documentary Festival. He was a founding member of the Athens International Film Festival “Opening Nights” (1995) and the Athens Open Air Film Festival (2010), where he was a director from 2007 to 2016. He has worked as a film critic and a journalist in newspapers, magazines and television and he has designed, curated and presented a number of art exhibitions in Athens, Thessaloniki, and Geneva. In 2017, he was the curator of the Greek Pavillion of the 57th Venice Biennale. In 2013, he was decorated as a Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by France. Dark Plural, his debut poetry book, was awarded the Golden Prize for Best Illustration at the 2022 Greek Visual Communication Design Awards.
